Nigeria’s federal government has committed to a significant increase in the supply of agricultural inputs to farmers nationwide as part of its strategy to enhance food production.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari outlined this key initiative at the 46th meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security in Calabar, Cross River State.

The minister noted that the timely and adequate provision of essential inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides, and high-quality seeds is crucial to boosting agricultural yields and ensuring food security.

Boosting food production

To this end, the government’s focus on agro-input supply is part of a broader effort to revitalise the agricultural sector.

According to the minister, the move is also significant as it seeks to address the challenges of food scarcity and rising food prices.

Essentially, the aim is to stimulate agricultural productivity and create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities, by empowering farmers with the necessary tools and resources.

Multiple initiatives for agricultural growth

In addition to the agro-input supply initiative, the government plans to:

  1. Strengthen agricultural institutions: To improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. Foster collaboration: Between farmers, herders, and communities to promote sustainable practices.
  3. Develop irrigation schemes: To ensure reliable water supply for agriculture.
  4. Improve soil health and data management: To optimize agricultural practices.
  5. Enhance research capabilities: To drive innovation and technological advancements.
  6. Strengthen agricultural education and training: To develop a skilled workforce.

Meantime, the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security serves as a platform for stakeholders to discuss and coordinate efforts to improve the agricultural sector.

The meeting in Calabar provided an opportunity to review existing policies, identify challenges, and develop strategies to enhance food production and ensure food security for all Nigerians.

Senator Kyari emphasised the importance of the Council meeting as a platform to review policies, programs, and projects. He urged participants to prioritize inclusivity, transparency, and partnership to drive agribusiness growth.

State governments commitment

Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu, represented by his Deputy, Peter Odey, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting smallholder farmers through inputs and financial grants. It pledged to collaborate with the federal government to implement President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural policies.

Leveraging technology and entrepreneurship

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, highlighted the government’s intention to utilise infrastructure, technology, and entrepreneurship to explore the agricultural potential and achieve food security.

The Council meeting concluded with the recognition of outstanding farmers and stakeholders who have made significant contributions to the agricultural sector.
