At a special World Food Day event in Niger State, Williams Audu was crowned the best maize farmer in a friendly competition organised by One Acre Fund Nigeria. This recognition highlights the growing importance of improved farming techniques and partnerships in boosting agricultural productivity.

One Acre Fund and improved farming practices

The competition focused on evaluating maize stalk heights and cob weights to identify the best-performing farmer. Audu, who outperformed his peers, received a modern motorised knapsack sprayer and quality maize seeds. He shared how his farming output had dramatically improved since adopting the fund’s innovative practices. Before the program, he struggled to feed his family now, his harvests have surpassed expectations.

The Village Head of Maikunkele, Alhaji Suleiman Abdullahi Dada, praised One Acre Fund’s work in the community, particularly its ability to provide access to seeds, fertilisers, and valuable knowledge. This support has empowered local farmers to farm more successfully and contribute to Niger State’s food security.

Partnerships for sustainable agriculture

Emmanuel Bamgboye, Field Operations Lead at the social enterprise, emphasised the significance of partnerships in achieving sustainable agriculture. The organisation is committed to continuing its collaboration with local farmers, leaders, and government officials to drive lasting progress in food production and lift communities out of poverty.

The event also drew attention from the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alhaji Shehu Galadima, who expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between farmers and One Acre Fund. He believes this partnership will further strengthen farming and food production in Niger State.
