Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to revolutionising agriculture and boosting food production in Nigeria. He emphasised that this transformation can be achieved through strategic partnerships with research institutions such as the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and dedicated volunteer organisations.

Speaking during an assessment tour of IITA in Ibadan on Tuesday, the Vice President expressed confidence in the institution’s expertise and potential to unlock Nigeria’s agricultural capabilities. He stated that the Tinubu administration is taking decisive action to address the nation’s food security challenges, demonstrating a commitment beyond rhetoric.

“The IITA has been at the forefront of agricultural research, food security, and economic development across Africa for over five decades,” Shettima noted. “We have some of the best crop scientists working here, yet Nigeria has not fully harnessed their potential. It is time to change that.”

Shettima highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency, especially in light of the recent withdrawal of some specialised international grants to support the agricultural and health sectors. He explained that President Tinubu specifically directed key government officials, including the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, to assess IITA’s work firsthand.

IITA Director-General, Dr Simeon Ehui, welcomed the Vice President and his delegation, showcasing groundbreaking agricultural innovations, including climate-resilient seed varieties and improved cassava, maize, and cowpea strains. He also revealed plans for a Regional Hub for Fertiliser and Soil Health to enhance sustainable farming practices.

The Vice President’s visit underscores the government’s renewed focus on leveraging research and technology to transform agriculture, ensure food security, and empower Nigerian farmers.
