Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has emphasised the crucial role of an agricultural revolution in ending food insecurity and reducing poverty in the country.
He made this statement during the 13th Convocation Lecture of Al-Hikmah University, highlighting the potential of technology to achieve food security for the nation’s growing population.
The VP declared that only when Nigerians can only identify sectors of the nation’s agricultural assets that would benefit from the application of technology when they begin to think boldly about revolutionising production, processing and guaranteeing sustained food security.
He added that Nigeria has the resources to be a major player in the global agricultural market and to feed its huge population. Also, the country can grow into a vibrant agricultural industry that supplies the rest of the world with the aid of technology to get the greatest value.
Shettima outlined three key pillars for securing Nigeria’s future. He said these include; imaginative and bold leadership, a secure and peaceful environment and a sound education system.
Also, the VP stressed the importance of moving away from traditional values that solely emphasise hard work and reward. Instead, he urged for the movement towards a future where universities become centers for innovation and entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector.
This call for an agricultural revolution comes amid growing concerns about food insecurity in Nigeria. Professor Noah Yusuf, Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, highlighted this issue during his welcome address when he stated that most citizens are struggling with how to find food for their daily living.
Analysts say the Vice President’s message offers a clear roadmap for addressing the challenge while ensuring a brighter future for Nigeria.
