News in brief:
– The USDA launched the largest-ever crackdown on SNAP benefit fraud, targeting criminal networks exploiting EBT cards.
– Focused in southern California, the operation led to multiple arrests and reinforced the government’s commitment to protecting low-income families and taxpayer resources.
In a sweeping operation targeting fraudulent abuse of the United States Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other federal law enforcement agencies launched the largest-ever SNAP fraud enforcement action to date.
According to a report, the effort, focused primarily in southern California, was led by the US Secret Service and included over 100 surveillance operations across SNAP-authorised retailers.
The operation aimed to dismantle criminal schemes exploiting Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards used by low-income Americans to access food aid. Officials revealed that organised criminals, including international groups, have increasingly used advanced tools such as card skimmers and cloned point-of-sale terminals to intercept and steal benefits.
“These are truly sick and depraved individuals who are stealing food from low-income Americans for their own profit,” said Acting Deputy Under Secretary John Walk.
Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins emphasised the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on fraud, stating: “We are fighting back against the misuse of taxpayer dollars and ensuring those who need and qualify for benefits actually receive them.”
The coordinated operation involved the USDA Special Investigations Unit, Homeland Security Investigations’ El Camino Real Financial Crime Task Force, and the US Secret Service. Multiple arrests were made, and substantial evidence was seized from SNAP retailers suspected of illegal activities.
Beyond financial loss, officials warned that SNAP fraud deprives vulnerable families of critical support while fueling illicit networks. “This operation sends a clear message,” said Secretary Rollins, “fraud will not be tolerated.”
The country’s agriculture agency has pledged continued vigilance and expanded enforcement nationwide. As international fraud threats evolve, the department aims to fortify safeguards and uphold the integrity of one of America’s most vital social programs.
