The Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) program convened a two-day workshop in Kano, Nigeria, bringing together researchers, seed companies, farmers, and development partners to address challenges in the country’s wheat seed sector.

This second edition of the Training of Trainers Workshop on Wheat Seed Production aims to chart a roadmap for a more robust wheat seed system in Nigeria, according to a news coverage of the event.

Organised in partnership with various stakeholders, including Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the workshop emphasises TAAT’s commitment to transforming African food systems through innovative technologies and sustainable seed production.

Key participants include prominent figures like Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari, and representatives from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Benefits of the TAAT workshop for Nigerian farmers

As highlighted by Dr. Solomon Gizaw, Head of the TAAT Clearinghouse, the workshop seeks to identify and address challenges hindering the wheat seed sector, including seed quality, accessibility, and affordability for Nigerian farmers.

Through knowledge sharing, technical training, and practical demonstrations, the workshop aims to equip participants with skills in wheat seed production, post-harvest handling, variety maintenance, seed marketing, and more.

A key anticipated outcome is the increased availability and affordability of quality wheat seeds in Nigeria, achieved through enhanced seed production skills, capacity building for seed companies, and community-based seed production initiatives.

This collaborative effort underscores TAAT’s commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural development in Africa by tackling critical challenges in the seed sector and empowering local stakeholders.
