Sri Lanka Celebrates Pineapple Export Milestone To China

News in Brief:
– Sri Lanka achieves market access for fresh pineapples in China, marking a significant milestone for its agricultural sector.
– Stringent phytosanitary measures and UN initiatives aim to boost production quality and elevate local farmers’ prospects.

The General Administration of Customs of China has officially granted market access for fresh pineapples from the island nation, a report says. This achievement marks a significant step forward, as pineapples become the second Sri Lankan fruit to gain approval for export to China, following bananas in 2015.

Sri Lanka boasts over 100 varieties of edible fruits, yet its agricultural sector faces challenges such as post-harvest losses and low yields. This milestone offers a ray of hope for local farmers, presenting an opportunity to enhance production and meet international quality standards.

With the launch of a $1.5 million project by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in May 2023, efforts to improve fruit value chains in Sri Lanka gained momentum. Focusing on bananas, mangos, and now pineapples, this initiative aims to elevate production, quality, and market value, benefiting farmers across the country.

The road to export success is paved with strict phytosanitary protocols outlined by the GACC. From implementing quality management systems to employing pest control techniques, Sri Lankan orchards must adhere to rigorous standards to ensure the integrity of each shipment.

Even after gaining access to the Chinese market, vigilance remains paramount. Sri Lankan authorities are mandated to conduct thorough inspections of each shipment, with stringent measures in place to detect and address any phytosanitary issues promptly.
