Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State officially opened a new €25 million state-of-the-art fish and poultry feed plant in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. The facility, operated by Skretting Nigeria Limited, is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s food security efforts.
The governor highlighted the plant’s timeliness in addressing the rising costs of animal feed, during his speech. He said this was paramount because accessing premium animal feeds has been a major challenge for farmers.
Therefore, Makinde noted Skretting’s production capacity of 125,000 metric tons of feed annually, as capable of making the essential products more affordable.
Additionally, Seyi Adeleke-Ige, General Manager of Skretting Nigeria Limited, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s agricultural sector. She disclosed that the new plant is expected to create 135 direct jobs and an additional 150 indirect jobs through third-party agencies.
Furthermore, she mentioned that these job opportunities are added benefits of the plant to the community as it will also produce high-quality and affordable fish and poultry feed.
Naturally, the investment aligns with Skretting’s existing Catfish Sustainability project. The project has reportedly been instrumental in supporting and growing fish farming in Nigeria since 2015.
Skretting is the aquaculture part of Nutreco, a Dutch producer of animal nutrition, fish feed and processed meat products. The parent company was founded in 1994 and it has 100 production facilities in more than 30 countries, and eight research centers.
