Research insights into the potentials of sea urchins

Scientists from the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries, and Food Research and Training (IFAPA) have found promising evidence that sea urchins consume Rugulopteryx okamurae as part of their diet. Through meticulous examination of stomach contents and genetic analysis, researchers have confirmed the sea urchin’s appetite for the invasive algae.

Beyond sea urchins, researchers are also investigating the potential role of herbivorous fish, such as the salema porgy, in controlling seaweed proliferation. Additionally, innovative approaches are being explored to manage algal blooms on beaches. Researchers propose utilising seaweed as a nutrient-rich fertiliser for industrial greenhouses, offering a sustainable solution to both environmental and agricultural challenges.

The spread of Rugulopteryx okamurae not only threatens local biodiversity but also, exacerbates existing environmental pressures, such as rising seawater temperatures. The seaweed’s proliferation has disrupted ecosystems once inhabited by sea urchins, leading to ecological imbalances along the coast.

As efforts to combat the seaweed invasion continue, authorities are taking proactive measures to protect sea urchin populations. Recognising the cultural significance of sea urchin harvesting, regulations aim to preserve this tradition while safeguarding marine ecosystems.
