Rivers State Governor To Revolutionise Agriculture Using Songhai Farms

News in brief: Governor Siminalayi Fubara plans to transform agriculture in Rivers State, starting with Songhai Farms, in alignment with the national push for economic diversification. Fubara expressed satisfaction during an inspection of the facility and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making agriculture a cornerstone of the state’s economy.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said that his administration is set to revolutionise agriculture in the state, using the Songhai Farms in Bunu community, Tai Local Government Area, as a launch pad.

He made the announcement during an inspection visit to the farm. His visit followed the decisions made at the last National Economic Council meeting, which called for diversification of the economy in order to cushion the current economic hardship that citizens were experiencing.

The governor inspected some sections of the facility with the manager, Dr Sammy Jaja in tow, and expressed satisfaction with the level of development he saw. He added that his administration would provide the necessary support to ensure that the farm reached its full potential.

Fubara further said that the government is commited to making agriculture the mainstay of the economy. He restated his belief in Songhai’s Farms’ potential to be a major driver of agricultural development in Rivers State.

Songhai Farms is a model agricultural farm that uses integrated farming methods to produce a wide range of crops and livestock. It also has a training center where farmers learn modern agricultural practices.

The Tinubu administration has been vocal about improving the Nigerian agriculture sector right from its campaign promises. Also, there seem to be a stronger drive towards moving the country away from relying heavily on crude oil earnings. Thus, Fubara’s announcement falls in place with the direction the country hopes to be moving in.
