Oyo State Cracks Down On Poultry Businesses To Curb Zoonotic Diseases, Safeguard Food

The Oyo State government is implementing stricter measures to clean up the state’s poultry industry in a bid to promote food safety and public health. It is introducing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for poultry processing businesse to tackle zoonotic diseases and eliminate unauthorised practices within the sector.

Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Olasunkanmi Olaleye emphasised the dual aims of this measures, saying that it was necessary in sanitising the poultry business and guaranteeing the safety of consumers.

Olaleye claimed that 90% of human diseases originate from animals (or are zoonotic). Thus, highlighting the urgency of proactive measures to ensure food safety. In addition, he stated that the regulations will encompass all aspects of poultry processing. It will cover sourcing chickens, slaughtering, transportation, and packaging. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure quality and hygiene at every stage of the supply chain.

The commissioner reiterated the requirement for all chicken processing facilities and slaughterhouses to be accredited and licensed before operating, which was in accordance with the Oyo State Meat Law. Also, the commission has commenced regular monitoring of slaughtering activities and animal businesses within the state.

Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Christianah Abioye, clarified that the SOPs are not intended to increase the burden of industry stakeholders but to create a transparent system for data collection and facilitate access to government support programs.

The Chairman of the Association of Poultry Processors, Oyo State Chapter, Balogun Aboidun, expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts. He said the efforts were urgently required in combating zoonotic diseases and supporting the poultry industry. Abiodun assured the administration of the association’s commitment to upholding the new regulations and contributing to the agricultural sector’s growth.

By implementing these rigorous SOPs and strengthening oversight, the Oyo State government demonstrates its commitment to building a safer and more sustainable food system. This proactive approach not only safeguards public health but also empowers the poultry industry to operate with greater transparency and efficiency, ultimately benefiting both consumers and producers.
