News in Brief:
Lagos State government has reintroduced a 25% discount on essential food items through the Ounje Eko scheme to alleviate the economic hardship faced by residents.
In a bid to reduce the economic burden faced by residents, the Lagos State government has announced the re-introduction of a 25% reduction in the prices of essential food items.
This initiative aims to cushion the impact of rising costs of living and ensure citizens can afford basic necessities.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, made the revelation during a recent television program as he called for an end to nationwide protests.
According to Omotosho, the reduction will be implemented across major markets and retail outlets statewide. Targeted food items include staples such as rice, beans, bread, garri, eggs, tomatoes, pepper, and other essential commodities.
He further explained that the decision to re-introduce the program was because of pressure from millions of Lagosians, who had benefited from the previous initiative.
Government to monitor and ensure benefits reach residents
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring price reductions to prevent profiteering and ensure benefits reach intended recipients.
Touted as a significant step toward addressing economic challenges in the populous state, the move is also expected to provide much-needed relief to struggling households.
It’s worth noting that the state government previously introduced a similar measure earlier this year to mitigate the effects of soaring food inflation. The Sanwo-Olu administration launched Ounje Eko scheme on March 17, with designated centers statewide for easy public access.
However, while residents expressed optimism about the price reduction initiative, some still believe that its coverage is inadequate.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Omotosho emphasised the importance of effective communication. He stated that his office will constantly disseminate information to the public while ensuring that violence is not a profitable option.
Details of Ounje Eko scheme re-launch
The re-introduced Ounje Eko scheme will operate on Sundays across 27 market locations in the state capital. There will be six centres on Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and ten in Badagry. Markets will be open from 11 am to 2 pm.
Finally, the Lagos State government has urged traders and retailers to cooperate with the initiative and adhere to price reductions. Enforcement measures will be implemented to ensure compliance.
