News in brief:
– Â Osun Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (O’RAAMP) eyes construction of three agro logistics centres and upgrade of rural roads across the state.
– Its aim is to revitalise rural areas and improve agricultural efficiency by addressing post-harvest losses, streamlining distribution, and enhancing farmers’ incomes through improved infrastructure and agricultural marketing facilities.
The Osun Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (O’RAAMP) is gearing up to revitalise rural areas and boost agricultural efficiency with plans underway to construct three agro logistics centres and upgrade rural roads across the state.
Project coordinator, Rasaq Okediya, announced the initiative during a recent media chat where he highlighted Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to rural development. He disclosed that this was evidenced by the release of counterpart funds that enabled O’RAAMP to settle debts and resume operations.
The key components of the plans is the construction of three state-of-the-art agro logistics centres, one in each of Osun’s senatorial districts. These centres will serve as storage and processing facilities for agricultural produce sourced from various parts of the state. It could be similar to the food hubs that the Lagos state government recently announced.
This initiative, dubbed the âagricultural marketingâ component of O’RAAMP, aims to address post-harvest losses, streamline distribution, and ultimately improve farmers’ incomes.
Recognising the crucial role of accessible infrastructure in rural development, O’RAAMP is also committed to upgrading several kilometers of rural roads. This includes spot improvements, routine maintenance, and regular rehabilitation efforts.
Furthermore, the improved road network is expected to not only facilitate easier transportation of agricultural produce but also enhance access to essential services in rural communities.
Okediya expressed gratitude to the state government for its support and emphasised the importance of cooperation from host communities where the agro logistics centres will be built. Such collaboration will ensure the smooth execution of the projects and maximise their benefits for the local population.
Overall, the project’s ambitious plans align with the Osun State government’s broader vision for rural transformation. By prioritising both agricultural marketing infrastructure and improved road connectivity, experts believe the project holds significant potential to boost economic activity. It also aims to enhance food security, and improve the lives of rural dwellers in Osun.
