The maple syrup sector in Ontario, Canada, is set to receive a significant boost, thanks to a joint investment of over $1 million from the government, according to a press release.

This funding, provided through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), aims to enhance the productivity and growth of maple syrup businesses in the province.

77 maple syrup producers will benefit from the initiative which offers cost-shared funding to support various activities aimed at enhancing operations. These include the purchase and installation of upgraded equipment such as reverse osmosis systems and remote monitoring systems, designed to increase productivity and efficiency. Additionally, funding is allocated for woodlot management activities, including tree marking and forest planning, to assist eligible businesses.

The funding is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting the agriculture and food industry’s growth. It complements previous investments, including the Grow Ontario Market Initiative and the Agri-tech Innovation Initiative, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to fostering sector development.

The Sustainable CAP, a $3.5-billion investment over five years, aims to strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and resilience in the agriculture sector. This investment underscores the importance of maple syrup production in Ontario and its role in contributing to the province’s economic prosperity.

Ontario’s maple syrup industry

Ontario’s maple industry has contributed over 1,000 jobs and nearly $42 million to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022. It also ranks as the third-largest maple syrup-producing province in Canada, yielding approximately 4.5% of the nation’s maple syrup output.

Expressing gratitude for the support, Randal Goodfellow, President of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association, hailed this initiative as a significant stride towards mutual sectoral growth.

As the Maple Weekend approaches on 6-7 April 2024, Ontarians are encouraged to partake in the festivities and visit participating maple producers, thereby championing local entrepreneurship and celebrating the rich heritage of Canadian maple syrup.
