Onion Prices Plummet In Kano As Abundant Harvest Reaches Markets

Must Read

News in Brief:
– Onion prices in Kano, Nigeria, have significantly dropped due to the start of the harvesting season and an abundant harvest.
– Although the influx of buyers, including those from Ghana, has driven down prices, concerns exist about a potential price increase due to high demand and exports.

The price of onions has significantly decreased in Kano, Nigeria, as the harvesting season commences, bringing much relief to consumers. This decline coincides with a surge in supply, evident in the bustling Gundutse onion markets overflowing with the produce.

A comparison by a local news outfit reveals a dramatic price drop, as a bag of onions that cost ₦120,000 in December 2023 now sells for ₦25,000, with white onions experiencing a similar reduction from ₦150,000 to ₦35,000 – ₦40,000.

Meantime, this decline in onion prices has attracted an influx of buyers, including those from neighboring Ghana, a phenomenon attributed to insecurity in other onion-producing regions and the closure of the Niger Republic border.

Marketers and farmers alike acknowledge this year’s bountiful harvest, with some attributing it to improved agricultural practices promoted by various projects and programs in the state.

However, concerns remain regarding the potential for prices to rise again due to the high demand and exportation of onions.
