News in brief:
– The Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport in Ogun State is 97% complete, with NAMA validating key runway and flight systems.
– Governor Dapo Abiodun says the airport’s certification will drive economic growth and regional trade.
The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ogun State has reached 97% completion, with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) completing critical runway checks and flight procedure validations. This milestone marks a major step toward the commencement of commercial flight operations.
NAMA validates flight procedures and navigational aids
The agency’s checks focused on the two primary orientations of the runway, Runway 23 and Runway 05, corresponding to southwest and northeast alignments, respectively. These checks are essential for calibrating runway infrastructure and navigational systems to ensure safe landings and takeoffs in all weather conditions.
According to NAMA, the validations involved aligning approach procedures and testing vital equipment like the Instrument Landing System (ILS). These systems are crucial for maintaining high safety standards, especially under low-visibility conditions.
The positive outcome of the checks, according to officials, confirms the airport’s operational readiness. NAMA also reviewed other critical infrastructure and advised on final installations needed before full certification.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the milestone in a statement shared on his official X account, praising the partnership between the state government and federal aviation authorities.
“We are pleased to welcome the team from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) who visited our Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport for a crucial round of flight checks and procedure validation, marking a significant step toward the commencement of commercial flight operations,” he stated.
Governor Abiodun emphasised that the airport, when operational, will significantly boost regional trade, industrial development, and economic growth across the state and beyond.

The Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport is equipped with world-class facilities, including a 4-kilometre runway—the longest in Nigeria—an ultra-modern terminal, advanced air traffic control systems, and a high-tech control tower. These features will facilitate efficient handling of both cargo and passenger traffic.
With just 3% of construction left, stakeholders anticipate the airport’s full readiness and certification in the coming weeks, setting the stage for its official launch and commercial use.
