– The institute’s outreach program educates students on soil health and the diverse career opportunities in the field.

The Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) is calling for improved soil management practices in the country, highlighting its critical role in achieving food security.

Professor Charles Asadu, the South East Coordinator of NISS, emphasised the importance of soil health during his speech at a program aimed at raising awareness among secondary school students about careers in Soil Science.

He stressed that proper soil management techniques are essential for optimal crop growth and long-term agricultural sustainability. The professor stated that the future of generations unborn would be bleak if the soil is not properly managed.

Thus, Asadu urged farmers to gain a deeper understanding of their soil composition to select suitable crops and maximise yields. He mentioned that the NISS program will try to challenge misconceptions about the agricultural sector. Some of the myths to be debunked  includes the notion that farming is a profession solely for the underprivileged.

Instead, the program will show the numerous career opportunities within soil science. From working in research institutions and fertiliser companies to environmental management and the oil and gas industry, soil science offers a diverse range of career paths, Professor Asadu explained.

The initiative was met with enthusiasm from both students and teachers at the Community Secondary School, Alor-uno, Enugu state. Principal Cosmas Odo commended the program for providing valuable insights into the field of soil science, potentially influencing future career choices among students.
