Nigeria’s federal government has announced plans to expand the swine and crop improvement project in Yadev, Gboko Local Government Area, Benue State. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, revealed this during a site visit at Akperan Orshi Polytechnic, recently.
Essentially, the initiative aims to transform the current facility into a fully operational, integrated piggery farming and processing centre.
Maiha had expressed satisfaction with the existing project’s foundation, stressing its potential to serve the local community. He also outlined plans to increase the farm’s capacity from the current 79 pigs to its full potential of 3,000.
‘”This will become a key reproductive centre, supplying piglets to local farmers,” he stated.
Genetic enhancement and processing capabilities
Additionally, the upgrade will include the introduction of diverse genetic breeds to enhance production beyond the current large white, duroc, and landrace varieties.
The government also intends to establish a small-scale processing unit for meat packaging and sales, utilizing modern technology to improve efficiency.
“We aim to introduce new genetics through crossbreeding with local breeds, resulting in faster and larger pig growth,” the minister explained. “This facility will also serve as a learning centre. We will ensure feed availability and foster cooperative systems for out-grower farmers, integrating them fully into the livestock industry.”
Broader agricultural support for Benue State
Meantime, in recognition of Benue’s significant agricultural role as the food basket of the nation, the federal government has also committed to revitalising the state’s poultry sector and developing pasture resources.
Furthermore, Aondoakaa Asambe, Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Transboundary, and Animal Control, highlighted the cultural and economic importance of pig farming in the region.
He affirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the federal government to maximise the livestock sector’s potential.
“We are ready to utilise this support to achieve significant growth,” he stated.
