The Bayelsa state government has announced a novel policy aimed at bolstering food security. Effective 29 April 2024, and lasting for six months, civil servants below Grade Level 14 will have their workweek reduced to three days, with the remaining two days designated for farming activities.
This directive, endorsed by Governor Douye Diri, is intended to encourage agricultural participation among government employees.
Also, Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, the Bayelsa State Head of Service, stressed the initiative’s focus on enhancing food production across the state and ensuring civil servants directly contribute to food security.
However, to maintain uninterrupted delivery of essential services, the policy exempts critical personnel such as teachers and medical professionals.
Meanwhile, Governor Diri expressed optimism about the policy’s potential to improve the state’s agricultural output. “By allocating dedicated time for farming,” he stated, “we are taking a proactive step towards self-sufficiency in food production, which is crucial for our state’s sustainability.”
