Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the development of an immediate action plan to halt the impending flood crisis nationwide. The directive was given during an emergency meeting at Aso Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, October 11, 2023.

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, set up a committee to be headed by Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

The directive from Tinubu comes as Nigeria is facing the threat of a devastating flood crisis. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning that over 30 states are at risk of flooding this year.

The floods are expected to be caused by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall, the release of water from dams, and sea level rise. It could have a devastating impact on the country, causing loss of life and property, displacing people, and disrupting economic activity.

In addition, it could severely impact food production by destroying crops and livestock. Already, several farmers in the country have aired their frustration about the coming flooding because their hands are tied and can do nothing about it.

Meanwhile, a local media reports claim that yhe President’s directive was lauded by stakeholders in the country as a welcome step. It is also hoped that the committee will be able to develop an effective action plan to halt the impending flood crisis.
