The Niger State government has taken a significant step towards boosting food production and security within the state through a partnership with Origin Group, a diversified agriculture value chain group, according to a statement from the office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
Origin Group, utilising their Total Agricultural Support Program (TASP) alongside Campo Company of Brazil, is providing specialised agricultural support to Niger State. Ultimately, the initiative aims to increase food production by fully irrigating 50,000 hectares of land. This comprehensive approach is expected to create employment opportunities, boost wealth creation for the population, and address post-harvest losses currently impacting farmers’ revenue.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration, through this partnership, underscores its commitment to an agricultural revolution in Niger State, with the goal of transforming the region into a leading agricultural hub within Nigeria.
The large-scale delivery of equipment and the focus on irrigation infrastructure development suggest a long-term strategy to address food security concerns and empower local farmers. It follows an earlier procurement and delivery of 300 tractors from John Deere to farmers in the state just last month.
