Multinational food and beverages company, Nestlé says it is investing to bring regenerative agriculture practices into its wheat supply chains in the US.
The company says, according to this news report, that it is helping wheat farmers employ sustainable techniques in their fields through financial support, technical resources and assistance to farms that are producing wheat for its DiGiorno pizza brand.
Nestlé adds that the initiative will bring regenerative agriculture practices to over 40,000 hectares of farmland, about nearly double the amount of land needed to grow the wheat used in its pizzas.
The food maker is banking on partnerships with Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) and Ardent Mills, two primary wheat flour suppliers for DiGiorno. It seeks to benefit wheat farms across the states of Kansas, North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri with the investment.
Steve Presley, Nestlé CEO for the North American zone, said that the companyâs aim is to help leave the world better than they found it. He added that they taking the opportunity to help create a regenerative, healthy food system by working with the local farming communities that employ it.
The company’s executive disclosed that the investment in wheat producers is just one example of how they are bringing the commitment to life across their supply chains.
Nearly two thirds of Nestléâs global greenhouse gas emissions come from sourcing ingredients through agriculture. It aims to source 20% of its key ingredients through regenerative agricultural methods by 2025, and 50% by 2030 on its way to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
