Newly appointed Liberian Agriculture Minister, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, has outlined a plan for Liberia’s agricultural sector, which prioritizes food security, youth employment, and increased rice production.

The plan aligns with President Joseph Boakai’s national development agenda, which placing agriculture at the center of Liberia’s economic future.

Specifically, the new agriculture minister’s plans include a comprehensive audit of the ministry to streamline operations, boost efficiency, and ensure proper alignment with its goals. Nuetah declared that the administration aims to make agriculture the ‘cornerstone’ of Liberia’s economy.

Additionally, policy enhancements and farmer support are planned to boost overall agricultural productivity.

Dr. Nuetah also revealed that the ministry aims to create jobs in agriculture by increasing staple rice production by 50% within five years. Explaining further, the new agriculture minister stated, “it is not just about sowing seeds; it’s about growing our economy, people, and nation.”

Ultimately, Liberia’s government’s development agenda prioritises agriculture alongside key areas like education and infrastructure. This agenda received unanimous support from the House of Representatives, reflecting the shared importance of agriculture in national development.
