Poultry processor Putnu Fabrika Kekava is planning to invest more than $15 million in biomethane gas plant constructions. Its aim is to reduce operational costs. According to a report, it incurred a net loss of $2.6 million in the 2021/2022 financial year.

Biomethane gas are produced by either upgrading biogas or gasification and methanation of solid biomass, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says. It is useful for electricity production, heating, and fueling vehicles.

Kekava wants to use biomethane gas for energy generation as it plans to phase out less sustainable natural gas. However, the poultry giant wants to be a in a position to be self-sufficient to a degree. It is not too different from BP’s biofuel backward integration move.

Production costs have been high since the beginning of COVID-19. However, it has gotten worse in the Baltic region after the pandemic lockdown measures eased. Andrius Pranckevi
