The Kano State government has allocated ₦16.6 billion to the agricultural sector in its 2025 budget, demonstrating a strong commitment to transforming agriculture into a key economic driver.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Musa Shanono, disclosed the budget details on Thursday, highlighting major irrigation and water supply investments. He stated that ₦3 billion has been set aside for constructing the 3.1 billion-litre Dansoshiya Dam and providing flowing channels to improve irrigation for farmers.
Boost for agricultural development agencies
The Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA) and the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) will receive ₦5.6 billion. These funds will be used to enhance agricultural productivity and competitiveness, particularly in crop and livestock farming.
To ensure farmers have access to quality inputs, the government has allocated ₦815 million for purchasing demonstration seeds, fertilisers, and agrochemicals. Additionally, ₦571 million has been budgeted for constructing onion beds across the state’s three senatorial districts, while ₦391 million will support women in agriculture under the value chain development programme.
Enhancing livestock farming and pasture development
Shanono further revealed that ₦167 million would be used to procure veterinary clinics and essential materials to improve animal health and livestock farming. Furthermore, ₦162 million has been set aside for establishing a pasture museum at Kadawa to support KSADP initiatives.
“These investments demonstrate the state government’s commitment to developing its agricultural sector, creating opportunities for farmers and herders, and ensuring food security for its citizens,” Shanono stated.
