– Despite challenges like unseasonal rains affecting colour, his organic methods yield valuable fruits, highlighting the potential of terrace agriculture for local innovation and sustainability.

Joseph Lobo of Shankarapura, renowned for his pioneering terrace agriculture, has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully cultivating the Miyazaki mango, Japan’s prized variety, on his terrace.

Traditionally nurtured in controlled environments like polyhouses with artificial heating, the Miyazaki mango fetches a staggering Rs 2.3 to 2.7 lakh (over $3,200) per kilogram in international markets. Despite challenges like unseasonal rains hindering the mango’s characteristic fiery red hue, Joseph Lobo’s terrace-grown Miyazaki mangoes mark a significant local milestone.

Purchased from a Kerala agricultural fair, Joseph’s Miyazaki plant took root three-and-a-half years ago. Today, bearing fruits weighing 600 to 650 grams each, these mangoes have flourished with organic nurturing in growbags.

Unlike its counterparts in Japan or Gujarat, Joseph’s mangoes may lack the fiery red hue due to climatic variations. However, his innovative methods prove terrace agriculture’s potential. With expanded growbags and enhanced organic practices, Joseph anticipates mangoes of up to one kilogram each.

Navigating market realities

Joseph warns of counterfeit plants in local nurseries, during his interview, urging vigilance among growers. Authentic Miyazaki plants, priced significantly higher than imitations, are crucial for maintaining quality and market integrity.

Beyond its monetary value, the Miyazaki mango is celebrated for its health benefits, rich in antioxidants, Beta Carotene, and Folic acid. Its local cultivation not only introduces a premium fruit to local diets but also underscores the potential of terrace farming to transform agriculture in the region.

Supported by his family, including his daughter Janisha Lobo, who is a karate champion, Joseph Lobo exemplifies local ingenuity in agriculture. His terrace farm hosts a diverse array of fruits and medicinal plants, enriching both his family’s diet and the local agricultural landscape.
