The recent memorandum of understanding signed between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) marks a significant step towards enhancing support for rural and indigenous populations in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in the Amazon region.

The agreement aims to tackle poverty reduction, improve food and nutritional security, and enhance climate change adaptation through joint initiatives. These include technical assistance, project development and financing, improvements in procurement and financial management, adoption of innovative technologies, and engagement of the private sector in small-scale agriculture.

Since 2018, both institutions have collaborated on projects in Brazil, Ecuador, and Haiti, focusing on innovation and rural poverty reduction. The recent launch of the AgroWeb3 project in 2023 illustrates their commitment to leveraging blockchain technology for protecting farmers’ data and enhancing their financial inclusion.

Future collaborations will explore areas such as water management, physical and digital connectivity, empowerment of small farmers through initiatives covering insurance, social protection, nutrition, and health. Efforts will also advance agricultural adaptation in the Andean region and conservation in the Amazon.

IFAD’s investments in Latin America and the Caribbean are at an all-time high, totaling $1.6 billion across 31 operations in 17 countries. These efforts have positively impacted 2.1 million rural families, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems.
