Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has solidified his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and agricultural development by disbursing ₦140 million to young farmers.
The funds are intended to support the first harvest of these farmers, who are participating in the state’s Bring Back the Youth in Agriculture programme, a collaborative effort with YSJ Farms Limited.
Boosting food production and economic opportunities
Governor Oyebanji restated the urgent need to address the nation’s food security challenges, particularly in light of the global food shortages experienced this year.
The governor stated that if we are going to develop agriculture and create wealth, we have to be extremely deliberate about our procurement process.
He highlighted the program’s dual purpose: stimulating agricultural activities and providing financial opportunities for young people.
Also, to enhance the farmers’ productivity, the governor revealed plans to facilitate the leasing of tractors through partnerships with investors.
This approach aims to avoid unnecessary government expenditure on agricultural equipment while ensuring that farmers have access to the necessary tools.
Addressing bureaucratic hurdles and economic stimulus
Meantime, Governor Oyebanji expressed concern over certain individuals within the Ministry of Agriculture who may be hindering progress in the sector. He urged them to align with the government’s vision of revitalising agriculture and improving food security.
Furthermore, the governor underscored the economic impact of the recent disbursements, totalling ₦300 million within 48 hours.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in advancing the state’s agricultural initiatives. He outlined plans to establish Renewed Hope Farm settlements in all farm clusters, providing essential infrastructure and resources for farmers.
Additionally, the governor acknowledged the challenges that young farmers face, including accommodation needs. He assured them that the government is taking steps to address these issues, such as renovating the old Awolowo farm settlement and allocating funds for the development of new farm settlements in the upcoming budget.
A collaborative effort for sustainable agriculture
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluade, expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for his dedication to lifting Ekiti State out of poverty through agricultural initiatives.
He highlighted the Agri-preneur program, which aims to create 10,000 jobs in the sector.
The commissioner also restated the importance of patience and perseverance in agriculture. He encouraged young farmers to remain committed to their work, as the rewards will eventually materialise.
Young farmers who received the funds expressed their appreciation for the governor’s support and the opportunities provided by the program. They expressed optimism about their future in agriculture and their ability to contribute to the state’s economic growth.
YSJ Farms’ CEO, Yemisi Joluwe, commended the young farmers for their resilience and dedication. She expressed confidence in their ability to succeed and contribute to the state’s agricultural development.
