News in brief:
– Nigeria secured a $5 million grant to boost industrial cassava production and maize seed system development.
– It also provides the country with $600,000 to support flood relief, agriculture, and health reform efforts.

At the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Nigeria secured a $600,000 relief fund from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to aid flood victims and improve the agricultural and health sectors. This initiative addresses the country’s pressing developmental challenges while advancing reforms and economic development.

The charity organisation pledged the relief funds to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Borno State. This assistance will help rehabilitate affected communities and ensure that essential services are restored swiftly. The flooding crisis is one of Nigeria’s urgent environmental challenges, and such external funding will be critical for immediate relief.

Cassava and maize programmes

An additional $5 million grant was approved by private foundation to support the Lagos Business School and its partners in developing the industrial cassava sector and maize seed production.

Industrial cassava farming is a huge economic opportunity for Nigeria, presenting the potential to generate billions of dollars in revenue. The fund aims to support research and development in cassava economics, ensuring that farmers can harness the full potential of this crop.

The financing will also support the Cassava Investment Accelerator and Telemaze maize production programme, which are key government initiatives aimed at boosting Nigeria’s agricultural output. It will pay special focus to scaling up drought-tolerant maize production and creating a sustainable seed system in the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment to improving health, nutrition, and agricultural development. Shettima emphasised that food security is a top priority, alongside industrial agricultural development. He promised swift action on import permits for 5,000 metric tons of certified maize seeds, which are essential for building a strong seed system and improving crop yields.

Dr. Christopher Elias, President of the Global Development Programme at the Gates Foundation, affirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria during times of crisis, particularly in the health sector.

The Gates Foundation has also invested $60 million in various programmes, including reproductive health and efforts to eradicate polio in Nigeria.
