Nigeria’s Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has achieved a historic milestone, claiming the top spot among African universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (WUR). The institution also finished at the 7th spot globally in the agriculture and forestry category.

According to a report, this feat marks a significant climb for the education institution, which previously secured the second position in Nigeria in the 2023 Sub-Saharan Africa University rankings and held the title of best public university in Nigeria.

The 2024 WUR employed a rigorous new 3.0 methodology that meticulously evaluated 2,671 entries from 1,906 universities across 108 countries and regions. This methodology delves into 18 performance indicators across five critical areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

Furthermore, the ranking process involved analysing over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications, collecting survey responses from 68,402 scholars, and considering a total of 411,789 data points from participating institutions.

Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, hailed this achievement as a testament to the dedication of the entire university community. He emphasised the importance of continued collaboration in reaching even greater heights.

Meantime, FUNAAB’s rise to the top of African agriculture universities and its impressive global ranking reflect a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and industry engagement. Analysts opine that the recognition further solidifies the Times Higher Education Rankings’ credibility as a trusted benchmark for students, educators, governments, and industry experts worldwide.
