Professor Abdulraheem Afonja, a former Commissioner for Works and Transport in Oyo State, has donated ₦5 million to support yam farmers in Oriire Local Government Area. This drive aims to boost food security and agricultural productivity in the region.
Afonja, while presenting the cash to beneficiaries, stated that it would help address challenges faced by farmers due to economic hardship, particularly during the planting season. He stressed that the donation complements the Oyo State Government’s efforts on food security and aims to enhance yields within Oriire LGA and the wider Ogbomoso zone.
Also, the former Commissioner highlighted his commitment to public well-being, focusing on five key areas: security, health, education, economic development, and social welfare for vulnerable groups. He stressed the importance of addressing these areas to create prosperity and attract investment to Oyo State.
Understanding farmers’ needs
Afonja, himself a farmer in Oriire, acknowledged the difficulties faced by small-scale farmers. He pointed out the lack of access to bank loans due to collateral requirements and the threat posed by cattle herders who damage crops.
Furthermore, he detailed his past efforts in supporting the local government, including grading rural roads to improve accessibility and collaborating with security outfits to protect farmers’ interests. Afonja emphasised the need for collaboration beyond government intervention, citing his previous initiatives as examples.
Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the donation, highlighting its potential to increase yam production during the upcoming planting season.
