The Flour Mills Association of Nigeria (FMAN) has partnered with over 8,000 farmers in Jigawa State to cultivate 5,000 hectares of wheat, aiming to improve local production and achieve national self-sufficiency.
During a ‘Green Field Day’ event showcasing these efforts, FMAN Wheat Development program manager Dr. Samaila Aliyu emphasized the project’s goal of demonstrating wheat’s viability in Nigeria.
He expressed confidence in the country’s potential to become a wheat exporter, citing the collaboration between FMAN, farmers, governments, and other stakeholders across 17 states.
Additonally, Dr. Aliyu told the press that the success in Jigawa’s Yandutse village exemplifies the association’s commitment to encouraging domestic wheat production for self-reliance, job creation, and economic growth.
FMAN commended Jigawa state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, for his support in this endeavour.
Meanwhile, Malam Mujtaba Bayi, chairman of the Jigawa State Wheat Farmers Association, expressed gratitude for FMAN’s interventions. He noted that this has attracted new farmers and helped Jigawa become a leading wheat producer. Bayi also highlighted the provided resources, including improved seeds, fertilizers, and training on modern farming techniques. He concluded that these initiatives have empowered farmers to expand their production significantly.
