Nigeria’s Federal Government has launched the Youth Farmers Enrollment Portal to address the pressing issues of youth unemployment and food insecurity.
The initiative, unveiled by the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, during a ceremony in Abuja, was developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Youth Economic Engagement and De-Radicalisation Programme (NIYEEDEP).
The portal aims to create economic opportunities for young people while strengthening the nation’s agricultural sector. According to Olawande, the intervention aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s economic agenda, actively engaging youth in driving economic development.
It sets an ambitious target of creating 6 million direct jobs for youths by 2025 across various sectors including agriculture, food and beverage, and agro-allied industries.
Effectively, this will also combat household poverty, hunger, and food insecurity, which pose significant threats to national security.
The portal serves as an innovative platform specifically designed for individuals aged 18 to 35. It provides access to a comprehensive range of resources such as:
- Agricultural Training Programs: Equipping young farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge for successful agricultural practices.
- Modern Farming Techniques: Introducing innovative and efficient farming methods to increase productivity and yield.
- Mentorship Opportunities: Connecting young farmers with experienced professionals for guidance and support.
- Financial Support and Resources: Providing access to funding and resources to start or expand agricultural ventures.
Meantime, the minister explained that the initiative extends beyond simply increasing food production.
“It’s about empowering young Nigerians with sustainable skills, creating jobs in both rural and urban areas, and ultimately ensuring the welfare and security of our citizens,” he stated.
Additionally, he urged young people across the nation to seize this opportunity to shape the future of agriculture and contribute to national development. The minister encouraged them to visit the enrollment portal at www.niyeedep.org to register and embark on their journey towards a successful career in agriculture.
