The European Commission has recently opened applications for the 3rd edition of the EU Organic Awards, in a bid to recognise and celebrate pioneers in the organic farming sector.

The prestigious awards aim to applaud innovative and sustainable projects along the organic value chain that significantly contribute to the organic food production and consumption landscape.

Key categories and criteria for EU Organic Awards

The awards will be presented in eight categories, ranging from recognising the Best Organic Farmer and Best Organic Region to acknowledging outstanding efforts by cities, food processing SMEs, food retailers, and restaurants in promoting organic practices.

The application process is inclusive, inviting submissions from various actors and institutions across the EU involved in enhancing the affordability and accessibility of organic products.

As the organic movement gains momentum, local farmers stand to benefit from the increased demand and support. The EU’s commitment, as outlined in the Farm to Fork strategy, emphasises the importance of organic farming in developing sustainable food systems. Notably, since January 2023, the Common Agricultural Policy has provided increased financial support for the conversion to and maintenance of organic farming.

Positive progress and future prospects

A report published by the European Commission in September 2023 highlights the substantial progress made in implementing the action plan. The EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, underscores the awards as an opportunity to showcase the profitability of organic farming for farmers and businesses, its positive societal impact, and its role in environmental protection.

Prominent figures, including EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski and Mr. Jan Plagge, President of IFOAM Organics Europe, express their support for the EU Organic Awards. They emphasise the importance of these awards in recognising excellence, inspiring change, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices across Europe.

With the call for applications open until May 12, 2024, stakeholders in the organic sector are urged to share their stories and contribute to the ongoing transformation of European agriculture. The awards ceremony, scheduled for September 23, 2024, on EU Organic Day, promises to be a platform for showcasing the diverse and impactful initiatives driving the organic movement forward.
