A delegation of Danish government officials and businesses, led by the Consul General of the Royal Danish Embassy in Nigeria, Jette Bjerrrum, recently met with Governor Peter Mbah to discuss potential collaborations.
Shared values and vision drive interest
Bjerrrum noted that Denmark shares Enugu State’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, along with Governor Mbah’s vision for the state, are key drivers of their interest.
Specifically, she highlighted the state’s focus on the agricultural value chain, noting existing collaborations such as the supply of tractors and the establishment of a new tractor assembly centre.
Broader initiatives and future partnerships
Also, the Danish delegation expressed enthusiasm for the Governor’s initiatives, including the Smart School program, waste-to-energy projects, logistics improvements, international airport and cargo facilities, and healthcare advancements.
To this end, Bjerrrum indicated a desire to accelerate partnerships and attract more Danish companies to invest in Enugu State, stressing the importance of working alongside Enugu citizens to develop the state’s agricultural potential.
Enugu State cultivates growth in agriculture
Meantime, this interest from Denmark comes as Enugu State has been making noticeable strides in its agricultural sector.
Recent initiatives demonstrate a commitment to boosting production, supporting farmers, and modernising farming practices.
The state government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Cashew Association to significantly increase cashew production. This partnership will provide local farmers with access to improved planting materials, technical expertise, and potentially, wider markets.
To expand agricultural infrastructure, the state allocated ₦2 billion for the development of 260 farm estates. This investment aims to create opportunities for agricultural entrepreneurs and stimulate local economies.
Additionally, the state has supported its farming community by registering over 60,000 farmers in the past 18 months. This registration provides the government with valuable data for planning and implementing targeted agricultural programs.
Finally, to embrace modern agricultural technology, the state reportedly plans to establish 340 greenhouse technology farms.
Effectively, this project is expected to boost the production of high-value crops and enhance food security by enabling year-round production, reducing reliance on weather, and optimising resource use.
