In a recent decision, the Didsbury Town Council has greenlit a $500 million contribution from its economic development promotions/public relations budget to support the second annual Didsbury Chamber of Commerce Women in Agri-Business conference.

Set to take place on March 19 at the Didsbury Zion Church, the event anticipates a 25% surge in attendance, with around 125 participants, compared to its inaugural conference in 2023, according to a local news report.

The conference, a testament to recognising the indispensable role women play in agri-business, aims to equip attendees with valuable insights into enhancing leadership skills and fostering networking opportunities. During a January council meeting, Ethan Gorner, the town’s chief administrative officer, emphasized the significance of supporting local businesses, especially as agriculture remains a cornerstone of Alberta’s economy.

Didsbury is a town in Alberta, which is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada.

Support for local business expansion

Gorner, mentioned earlier, stressed the economic benefits, noting that the conference’s impact extends beyond empowering women in agri-business. By attracting local and regional business owners, the event not only underscores Didsbury’s commitment to business owners but also positions the region as a crucial player in global food security. The area is recognised as a vital breadbasket, making its agricultural contributions pivotal.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter, who attended the 2023 conference, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasising its significance for Didsbury.

Beyond the financial support, the conference sponsorship enables the town’s logo to be featured on advertising materials and receive daily radio mentions, contributing to increased visibility. This exposure not only attracts potential business endeavors but also offers existing businesses the opportunity to connect, network, and diversify their offerings, including value-added contributions to agriculture.
