Bauchi Women Farmers Receive 100 ‘Economic’ Trees

To foster environmental protection and beautification, the Project Management Unit of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL), Bauchi State, has donated 100 different species of economic trees to the Women Farmers Association in the state.

Economic trees are trees protected trees under a Forestry Law and include all trees within a forest reserve.

The donation was made during a training session organised by the state’s College of Agriculture(BASCOA) Women Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society for backyard farming.

Specifically, the initiative aims to encourage the planting and ownership of trees by the general public. This is expected to address the lingering environmental challenges and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The donation of trees to women farmers is part of the One Person One Tree initiative introduced by Bauchi’s ACReSAL. It seeks to involve women as critical stakeholders in its implementation.

Collaborative efforts for sustainable development

The State Project Coordinator, Dr Ibrahim Kabir, emphasised the importance of women’s participation in environmental conservation efforts. He commended the BASCOA’s Multi-purpose Cooperative Society for its efforts to empower women in backyard farming. He also called on other women’s groups to emulate their example.

Additionally, the Provost of the College of Agriculture also highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to achieve sustainable development. He encouraged participants to actively contribute to addressing the effects of climate change through their backyard farming activities.

Meantime, the Chairperson of the Women Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Hajiya Amina Haruna, emphasised the importance of empowering women to be self-reliant through agricultural activities. She noted that the trees donated by agency would play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Furthermore, the special assistant to the State Governor on Agriculture, Dr Aliyu Ilyasu Gital, commended the organisations involved in the training. He also encouraged knowledge sharing among participants. Dr Gital pledged government support to such initiatives aimed at achieving food security in the state.
