In a bid to enhance food security in Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has declared the first and third Friday of every month as Farm Days. This initiative aims to encourage workers to actively participate in agricultural activities.
The announcement was made during the 2024 May Day celebration, emphasising the government’s commitment to workers’ well-being.
Governor Eno seized the opportunity to highlight other efforts toward worker welfare, including the disbursement of ₦16.1 billion to clear gratuity arrears for retired civil servants. He announced a ₦2 billion additional allocation for gratuity payments, bringing the total to ₦18.1 billion.
The governor expressed gratitude to labour unions for their support during the elections and pledged continued focus on worker welfare. Regarding the new national minimum wage, he stated that implementation would follow federal government guidelines.
To achieve long-term food security, Eno emphasised the importance of agricultural development. He urged residents to dedicate the alloted farm days to farming activities and added that his administration plans to monitor these days to ensure proper adherence.
