News in Brief:
– USDA allocates $22.3 million through the 2501 Program to support underserved and veteran farmers.
– Local organisations provide crucial assistance and training to enhance access to USDA programs, fostering resilience in rural communities.
The U.nited States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced a substantial funding package totaling $22.3 million through its 2501 Program to bolster the resilience of underserved and veteran farmers and ranchers.
This initiative targets community-based organisations, educational institutions, and Tribal entities, aiming to empower farmers to own and operate prosperous agricultural ventures.
The Program, overseen by USDA’s Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement (OPPE), strategically channels resources to local communities and rural areas, ensuring that vital support reaches those who need it most. By providing tailored training and technical assistance, these partners play a pivotal role in facilitating access to the agency’s programs and services, thereby enhancing the prospects of underserved agricultural producers.
Originally established over 30 years ago, the 2501 Program has evolved to encompass assistance for veteran farmers and ranchers, thanks to provisions in the 2014 Farm Bill. With increased funding mandated by the 2018 Farm Bill, this initiative has broadened its scope, enabling organisations to conduct educational workshops, farming demonstrations, and conferences tailored to the unique needs of diverse agricultural communities.
Since its inception in 2010, the 2501 Program has been instrumental in fostering equitable access to USDA resources. Noteworthy initiatives include Farm to Table Guam, which provides crucial business training and technical assistance to farmers in Guam, and Quivira Coalition’s outreach efforts in New Mexico, delivering vital information on land stewardship practices to rural producers.
