The Ekiti State government has disclosed plans to plant two million trees in 2024 as part of its strategy to combat climate change and enhance environmental sustainability.
This initiative was revealed by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe. This was disclosed during a lecture at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ekiti State.
Also, Mrs. Aluko-Ajisafe reiterated the government’s commitment to mitigating these impacts. The commissioner highlighted various actions being taken by the ministry, including:
- Planting trees along medians within the state capital to promote green spaces and carbon sequestration, with ongoing maintenance.
- Targeting the planting of two million trees in 2024.
- Implementing desilting and dredging of canals to prevent flooding.
- Placing waste disposal bins in strategic locations in Ado Ekiti and regularly fumigating waste dumpsites.
Furthermore, Aluko-Ajisafe also stressed the importance of vulnerability assessments, flood warning systems, and transitioning to renewable energy sources as crucial steps in addressing climate change.
Subsequently, the CAN State Chairman, Rev. Emmanuel Aribasoye, commended the ministry’s efforts and echoed the importance of tree planting to preserve the environment.
