FG To Distribute 42,000 MT Of Grains To Vulnerable Citizens To Combat Food Insecurity

Nigeria’s federal government has announced the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes (MT) of grains to vulnerable citizens nationwide. The move is part of efforts to address soaring prices of food being experienced in the country.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, confirmed the initiative at a press briefing in Abuja. He stated that President Bola Tinubu, had approved the release of the grains from the national strategic reserves. The commodities include maize, millet, and garri and they will be distributed free of charge to those most in need.

Meanwhile, in a bid to ensure equitable distribution, the government has revealed that it is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Specifically, these agencies will leverage intelligence reports and existing indices to identify the most food-insecure communities and individuals.

Speaking further, the minister disclosed that meetings have been held with NEMA and the DSS, with a view to providing the index. Mr. Kyari added that these ‘are where to gather intelligence reports on where it is needed the most’.

Ultimately, the move comes amidst growing concerns about food affordability in Nigeria. President Tinubu, had last week, directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release the strategic reserves to combat rising prices.

Additionally, the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria pledged to release 60,000MT of rice to the market.

Subsequently, state governors have been informed of the grain distribution program. They are expected to cooperate in ensuring its smooth implementation and targeted reach.
