During a Senate plenary session reviewing Egypt’s efforts, El Sayed Al-Quseir, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture, proudly announced that the nation’s agricultural exports have soared to an impressive $9 billion in 2023.
This extraordinary accomplishment, the minister emphasied, is the result of strategic measures implemented by the Egyptian government to bolster the competitiveness of its agricultural exports on the global stage.
He highlighted the concerted efforts made by the Egyptian state to expand market access. Over the past decade, Egypt has successfully opened up a staggering 93 markets, with 30 of these being secured in the last three years alone.
Egypt’s diversification and growth
Egypt currently exports over 400 commodities to 160 markets worldwide. Notably, the Japanese market, unlocked in 2020 after arduous procedures, marked a significant milestone for Egyptian agricultural exports, particularly in citrus fruits.
Efforts are now underway to further penetrate the Japanese market with exports of grapes and pomegranates. Additionally, its potatoes have gained entry into the Brazilian market, further diversifying the export portfolio.
The volume of Egyptian agricultural exports has seen unprecedented growth, with fresh agricultural exports reaching 7.4 million tons in 2023âa remarkable increase of nearly one million tons from the previous year. This surge in volume translated into a historic value of $3.7 billion. Furthermore, manufactured agricultural exports amounted to $5.1 billion, culminating in a total export value of approximately $9 billion.
Minister Al-Quseir proudly announced Egypt’s continued dominance in citrus exports, maintaining the top position globally for oranges and frozen strawberries for the third consecutive year.
A decade of progress
Highlighting the remarkable progress achieved over the past decade, Minister Al-Quseir noted a substantial increase in agricultural exports, which soared from 4 million tons in 2014 to 7.44 million tons in 2023.
