Professor Yakubu Ochefu, Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, has called for a major shift in agricultural education, advocating for a technology-driven approach to modernise food production in Nigeria.
Delivering the 31st Convocation Lecture at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), titled ‘From Baby Boomers to Generation Alpha: Interrogating Generational Dynamics and Agricultural Education in Nigeria,’ Professor Ochefu highlighted the transformative potential of technologies like precision agriculture, drones, robots, and artificial intelligence. He emphasised the need for Nigerian universities, particularly agricultural institutions, to adapt to the changing needs of the younger generations and embrace these advancements.
The lecture explored generational dynamics, tracing the evolution from the Silent Generation to Generation Alpha, highlighting the distinct experiences and preferences of each cohort. Professor Ochefu emphasised the critical role of Generation Z, known for its comfort with technology, in shaping the future of agriculture. He urged universities to move beyond tradition and embrace the ‘virtual reality’ of this generation, offering relevant skills and knowledge that align with current realities.
His call resonated with other dignitaries present, including the Chairman of the Occasion, HRM Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola, who commended the lecture’s relevance in light of the shift towards technology-intensive agriculture. He stressed the importance of encouraging young, tech-savvy individuals to pursue careers in the sector.
Professor Babatunde Kehinde, Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing transformative knowledge and equipping students with the skills needed for a modern agricultural landscape. He highlighted FUNAAB’s position as the best University of Agriculture in Africa and 7th best in the world, attributing this achievement to hard work and dedication. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to maintain this position and contribute to Nigeria’s food security through innovative advancements.
