Nigeria’s National Directorate of Employment (NDE) launched an Agricultural Enhancement Scheme (AES) in Gombe state that empowered 48 unemployed youths with essential agricultural skills while providing them with start-up grants to start their own agribusinesses.

The launch ceremony, held at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Gombe, marked a significant step in the nationwide rollout of the AES, targeting a total of 700 beneficiaries across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Each successful trainee in Gombe received a grant of ₦50,000 to translate their newfound knowledge into tangible entrepreneurial ventures.

Speaking further, the Director-General of the NDE, Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, underscored the government’s commitment to promoting agriculture as a viable economic alternative for unemployed youth. He emphasised the scheme’s aim to not just create jobs but encourage young people to embrace modern agribusiness and contribute to national food security.

Additionally, the AES curriculum incorporates comprehensive training in various aspects of the agricultural value chain like production, storage, processing, and marketing. This holistic approach equips beneficiaries with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of running a successful agricultural enterprise.

Expressing their gratitude for the opportunity, several beneficiaries lauded the NDE’s initiative. Several participants noted the significance of the scheme in turning their agricultural dreams into reality.

The NDE’s Agricultural Enhancement Scheme represents a crucial step towards addressing youth unemployment and fostering agricultural development in Gombe and beyond. Analysts believe the program has the potential to revitalize rural communities and contribute to long-term economic growth.
