News in brief: Japan plans to provide remote medical care services and smart farming technology to support economic recovery and restoration efforts in Ukraine, instead of weapons.
Japan is looking to provide remote medical care services and smart farming technology to Ukraine to help revive its economy and restore areas devastated by the Russian invasion, according to a news report.
Details of the measures is set to be revealed at a meeting in Japan early next year to promote economic reconstruction.
Meanwhile, the digital healthcare services, like ultrasound scans, will be provided by Japanese companies enabling doctors in Japan provide medical care to injured people in Ukraine.
Japan also hopes to assist Ukraine with its wheat and sunflower yields through smart farming methods that utilise sensors and artificial intelligence.
As Japan has stringent regulations on providing weapons under its war-renouncing Constitution, it has committed to assisting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts through its public and private sectors instead.
Furthermore, among other measures to support Ukraine, the Asian nation is considering providing water purification and cyber security technologies.
Japan’s private sector is also getting actively involved in Ukraine’s reconstruction. For example, e-commerce giant Rakuten Group Inc. Chairman and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani accompanied former Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi to Ukraine and mentioned that his company’s social media platform, Viber, has the ability to block Russian propaganda from reaching Ukrainians.
