News in brief: Floods in Eastern region of Nigeria has caused significant losses for livestock farmers, with some shutting down operations after recording severe fatalities.
Recent flooding in Nigeriaâs Eastern region has left a trail of devastation in its wake, with livestock farmers moaning huge losses. Local media reports say some livestock farmers have had to shut down their entire operations after recording fatalities.
Proprietor of Matuuci Farms Limited in Anambra state, Patrick Sule-Ugboma, disclosed that the disaster wreaked havoc on his 20-hectare agricultural property leading to loss of 25,000 birds. He also lost fishes in ponds as well as agricultural equipment on the farm.
Sule-Ugboma also said the situation has led to the loss of jobs, as about 400 farm workers were directed to stop work due to the flooding.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had earlier warned about looming flood disasters in about 19 states, including Anambra. It warned that people in the area should make adequate preparations in good time to avert devastation.
The agencyâs warning was also in line with Anambra state governmentâs earlier warning about flooding dangers. Communities like Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Idemili South and Ihiala LGA were marked as high risk areas.
Nigeria been experiencing the worst flooding incidents in at least a decade with people losing homes, infrastructure and large areas of farmland across the country. More than 600 people have died and an estimated 2.8 million people have been displaced from their communities.
Nigeria is not alone in facing flooding disasters are it is a global phenomenon these past months. China, India and Africa as a whole has suffered extreme flooding.
