News in brief:
– DeepSeek has gained global attention for its cost-efficiency compared to its American competitors’ billions.
– It answers ‘What is agriculture?’ with ChatGPT, see how both models fare.
DeepSeek is the latest artificial intelligence (AI) phenomenon and has taken the world by storm after launching on January 20 2025. Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT went public, no model has been as popular until this Chinese product entered the fray. The company was founded by Liang Wenfeng, a graduate of electronic information engineering and computer science from Zhejiang University.
One reason for DeepSeek’s popularity is the claim that it only needs a small percentage of the advanced chips used in others like ChatGPT. This claim resulted in the fall of chip-maker, Nvidia’s stock, by about $600bn, according to a report. The AI model allegedly cost $6 million to build, compared to the billions it took to complete its American competitors.
For enthusiasts and users interested in how its performance measures against the more popular ChatGPT, I asked both of them the age-old question: What is agriculture?
DeepSeek AI Vs ChatGPT: what is agriculture?
When asked “What is agriculture?”, DeepSeek AI expands on the answer to include aspects of agriculture and explain each of them.
See the model’s reply:
ChatGPT’s reply to the same question is only similar at the beginning. Not going into detail about the different aspects shows the difference between both answers.
It is important to note that DeepSeek AI does not have access to my historical usage like ChatGPT does, so, it may not ‘know’ if I prefer my answers short and in a few sentences or not.
Researchers say that there is not much difference between both models, except for cost. The model that powers it is called R1 and it has about 670 billion parameters, which makes it the largest open-source large language model around. Yet, it is reported to be only as powerful as OpenAI’s O1 model in mathematics, coding and reasoning.
AI models with similar processing power are usually as powerful as the user (and the prompt they are fed). DeepSeek offering all its services free of charge may be the only edge it has over ChatGPT which charges a premium to access additional features.
