The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with MTN Nigeria and global weather intelligence firm Tomorrow.io to launch a Digital Climate Advisory Services System (DCAS). This innovative platform aims to provide Nigerian farmers with precise, location-based weather advisories via SMS, enhancing climate resilience and agricultural productivity.

Announced on Monday, the collaboration aligns with the United Nations’ goal of ensuring universal access to early warning systems. The initiative is also in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda, addressing the critical need for climate-smart agriculture in Nigeria.

Speaking at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing in Abuja, NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasised the transformative potential of the project.

“The primary goal is to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen resilience by delivering timely, localised weather information directly to farmers,” he said. He noted that the partnership leverages the expertise of MTN and Tomorrow.io, leaders in telecommunications and weather intelligence, respectively.

Karl Toriola, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, expressed optimism about the collaboration. “We are committed to supporting government initiatives that benefit Nigerians. This partnership will not only enhance agricultural outcomes but also contribute to emergency and disaster management, ultimately boosting the economy,” he stated.

Dr Henry Onyemachi, Managing Director of Tomorrow.io, highlighted the year-long planning process leading to the MoU. “This impactful project directly addresses food security, a priority for the current administration. We are excited about its potential to revolutionize farming practices in Nigeria,” he said.

By integrating private sector expertise into climate science, NiMet aims to create a sustainable model that benefits farmers, agribusiness owners, and the broader economy. The DCAS platform promises to empower farmers with actionable insights, helping them adapt to changing weather patterns and improve yields amid growing climate challenges.
