The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State has destroyed a six-hectare farm of Indian hemp in Alaka village as part of its intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking. The operation led to the arrest of four suspects connected to the illicit cultivation. The state command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
During a press conference in Abeokuta, NDLEA State Commandant Tijani Rabe outlined the agency’s accomplishments for the year. A total of 675 drug offenders were arrested, and 9.7 tons of solid drugs alongside 537.81 litres of liquid-based illicit substances were confiscated.
The command also secured 221 convictions against drug offenders, reinforcing its commitment to reducing drug-related crimes in the state.
Under the operation tagged “Operation Closed Gates,” the agency focused on blocking access routes used by drug merchants and syndicates to transport illicit substances. This initiative forms part of the NDLEA’s strategy to ensure a drug-free festive season.
Public awareness campaigns for prevention
In addition to enforcement, the NDLEA intensified its educational campaigns, organising 128 sensitisation programmes across schools, communities, and workplaces. These initiatives reportedly reached 27,648 people, raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and encouraging preventive measures.
Farmers and rural communities in Ogun State can benefit from the NDLEA’s efforts by having safer environments and reduced risks of illegal activities affecting their farmlands. The crackdown on illicit drug farming underscores the importance of lawful agricultural practices to sustain Nigeria’s agrarian economy.
