News in brief:
– Ogun State launches fish harvest to increase food security and reduce market prices, benefiting hundreds of farmers.
– The programme provides resources and subsidies, improving local food supply chains and supporting the states’ agribusiness sector.
The Ogun State Government recently launched a harvest initiative for fish farmers in the Ilaro community, enhancing food security and reducing prices across Nigeria.
Supported by the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), this initiative has provided local fish farmers with essential resources, including subsidised feed, to increase their productivity and ensure affordable fish supply for local markets.
The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Bolu Owotomo, explained that the programme aid includes 72 bags of feed at a 30% discount. Owotomo added that this aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s mission to make food more affordable and readily available in Ogun State.
With over 350 fish farmers in the Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government Area (LGA) actively harvesting, the commissioner highlighted the anticipated market relief, as the farmers have committed to selling their fish below the current market price.
The OGSTEP initiative also supports agricultural value chains beyond aquaculture, such as rice, cassava, and livestock, which further stabilises the market and reduces production costs.
OGSTEP Project Manager, Dr Oluseyi Olugbire, discussed how the initiative organises farmers into clusters, enabling them to operate more efficiently. This structured support links farmers with business plans and partnerships with buyers, ensuring a stable market for their produce.
One fish farmer, Oluwatoyin Aribanusi, who had benefitted from the program, expressed gratitude for the assistance in reducing her operational costs through discounted feed.
However, flooding remains a concern, with farmers requesting improved drainage to protect their investments and sustain long-term productivity.
